Unexpected...

It was Thursday, February 19 and the 7-day forecast wasn’t looking good except for Friday. One of my discing buddies, Ty, texted me to see if I could squeeze in a round before the snow and the wind came on Saturday…Of course I can find time! So I asked him if he would try a new course with me.

Friday I left school as soon as I could and met up with him. Sitting in north Wichita is a Salvation Army camp with a 10 hole course: Camp Hiawatha. I have known it was there, but pretty much disregarded it the last three and half years. This past January the local club (Air Capital Disc Golf Club) decided to hold their Ice Bowl there and it popped up on my radar again. I couldn’t make the Ice Bowl, so I suggested we go check it out. Ty agreed.

I’m going to pause for a moment…The day before we played Camp Hiawatha I got a comment on this website from a guy named Rob. He didn’t say where he was from, just that he was in his 50’s also and had just discovered disc golf. He too wants to play a bunch of courses in Kansas. I responded to his comment and said I hoped he we could meet up sometime, somewhere (he didn’t say where he was from) and play a round.

Back to the round. We parked and ended up close to hole 4. When we drove up there was a guy out on the course throwing. Ty started warming up while I got my GoPro set up and my cart ready. I saw him talking to him, so I putted a few and when Ty got back we headed for tee one. As we got close we ran into the guy again and as he walked up, he said, “Hey, you’re the guy from the blog!” Amazingly, it was Rob! We had a good laugh, chatted for a few minutes and then he joined us to show us around and throw for awhile. We got 13 holes in until he had to leave. This is exactly what I look forward to as I journey through Kansas and play different courses.

I can't believe that course is in town and I've been playing for 3.5 years and not played it before. I'll definitely go back. It's not a tournament course, it's not a blow 'em up course, it's not a big arm course it’s just a fun course. It is a great course to introduce the sport as well. As Ty and I were leaving, he looked at me and said, “You know what it would be great for?...night golf!”

UPDATE (2-26-15):
I don't know what it is about this course, but I got to play it again...Unexpectedly. The weather was too nice when I walked out of school on Tuesday, so I texted my throwing buddy, Ty, and he was already thinking the same thing. This time around I noticed a couple new things while squeezing 40 holes in! You can check those out on my course comments using the Courses link above.
