I came into Miltonvale from the west and turned into town a bit too early. You want to take the highway 189 exit on the east side of town because it runs right by the park where the course is located. I came in early and drove around town trying to find the course. Eventually, I ran into it.

I hope no one is offended, but my mind kept telling me this course couldn’t be all the great in this little dinky town in the middle of nowhere! I’ll apologize right now because I found the town a bit bigger than I thought and the course to be a great experience!

After parking the truck, I got out and the first thing I saw was a basket down almost under the bridge, apparently in the middle of the creek. Little did I know… As I looked around I spotted a few baskets across the creek and then to the west. I also saw the Hole 1 tee sign. I noted there seemed to be a good number of trees, but then again I didn’t know what was coming!

As I prepped to play, I noticed the course had already been mapped in UDisc which is awesome.

Hole 1 has a tight fairway with road/baseball field on one side with a sign saying the baseball field is OB, but not road. On the other side is a creek and the whole fairway slopes into it.

Hole 2 is on the other side of the bridge so there is a short walk. It throws into a tight are so even though it isn’t very long, it’s not necessarily easy.

Holes 3 and 4 also play south of the creek. They have planted some trees which will make things more interesting in a few years. There is a walk from basket 4 back across the creek to tee 5.

Hole 5 basket is tucked up against the creek in the trees so you need to be careful with your approach.

I hope you’ve enjoyed some open golf for a while!!

Tee 6 is across the creek from basket 5 but evidently the water doesn't flow much here because there are steps built up the west side to get across.  A limb has been bolted into a tree and the ground to serve as a rail to help crossing. The tee itself is close to the creek, elevated, with an opening through the trees. I’d have to classify this as a righty hole.

Now it’s time to “enjoy” the trees. There are new bridges from basket 6 into the woods and hole 7.

Hole 7 goes into the trees. It's across the first bridge and to the left. It is an awesome hole that I’m not sure you can birdie. It's short with lots of trees and I could only see one real route and it favors lefties. If you can get to the base of the hill up to the basket, you have a chance, but getting there is tough and the uphill shot is no slouch!

I had difficulty finding Tee 8 and ended up going back through fairway 7. In hindsight, I think you can go from 7 basket along the west side of the tree line to the north and find Tee 8.

But, you only thought it was wooded until you cross the bridges and stand at tee 9. The next several holes are crazy wooded!

I’m not sure you can get to basket 9 without hitting something.

Hole 10 is a short part 4. I couldn’t figure it out until I walked the fairway. There is a 90 degree turn in the fairway about half way to the basket. Good luck landing it so you have a clear shot to the basket. Even if  you do get to the corner, there is still the issue of getting it to the tree guarded basket. I was pleased to walk away with a par!

I had a tough time finding a line on Hole 11. A lefty can take it over the creek and I decided to anhyzer it to get it there, but managed to hit a tree and end up in the creek. It’s a tough up and down from there.

Hole 12 was a bit easier, but not easy.

Hole 13 finally takes you out of the woods to an elevated tee in an open area by the football field.

I had trouble figuring out hole 14 and ended up playing 17 instead. It appears the 14 tee is close to the football field and goes south to the general area of basket 6.

Hole 15 then goes east across a mainly open area.

Tee 16 is close to the wire boundary around the sports complex and goes across the football field so there will be times you can't play it. The football field is not notes as OB which is good because not everyone will be able to clear it. It appears that 13 and 16 are the same basket. it's the only basket so far without a number on it, it’s the only one in the area of 13 on the map and it’s the only one in the area of 16 on the map.

Hole 17 sets up nice from the combo basket as I already noted I thought it was 14. It’s a wide open hole with the sports complex on the left.

Hole 18 is a kicker. You can’t see the basket from the tee, there is a stone structure in the path, and it crosses tee 1. With it being a blind shot most of the way, it’s a good idea to walk up and take a look or even better, look at it before throwing hole 1. You’ll want to let it fall over the edge of the hill so you have a shot at the basket. If you go too far and it flies the hill, you can easily end up in the creek. The basket is set precariously on a piece of ground in the creek.

Overall, I was very happy with this course. It was a lot of fun and a real challenge as well. I think it could be made a bit better if just a little tree trimming happened back in holes 9-12. There were a lot of short holes, but all of them had issues, especially back in the trees. I would definitely come back and play this course. It would be a great combo trip with the Concordia Airport course. This is definitely a destination course!

I got here early in the morning during Spring Break. The campus was very quiet. As I drove up the road from Highway 81 I went by a Walmart. A little farther up I saw a basket under a tree close to the road near the first building I saw. It ended up being basket #1. I parked in the first lot I saw which ended up working very well as the 1st tee is tucked into the V of the building straight south of the east edge of that parking lot.

As I warmed up, I saw a bit more of the course. Fortunately, it was already mapped in the UDisc app so getting around was no problem. There is no sign or course map posted. There are tee markers in the ground in the form of 2 cement blocks painted yellow/gold and labeled.

I enjoyed my round and while it wasn’t heavily challenging, it did make you think a number of times as you stood on the tee. It would make a great warm up course before running across the highway to the Concordia Airport course or some good fun if you were limited on time. if you want to play this course when school is in session, be careful for people traffic and if there are athletic events in progress, a couple holes may not be playable.

Hole 1 is about 250' down hill and the ground drops off just past the basket. There is also a tree in play.

Hole 2 is straight, but about 40’ out are low hanging trees. It opens up on the other side where you’ll see the basket about 25’ on other side of some cement and railing. The hole runs uphill slightly the whole way.

Hole 3 is 560' with the tee elevated significantly but drops off to flat most of the way. The basket is close to the ball field and long jump pit.

Hole 4 plays about 315' with a skinny fairway that has trees on the left and drop off (ridge) on the right. There is really no big trouble although the ball field is on the right.

Hole 5 is 267' slightly uphill with the basket about 10' above tee. It is tucked into the corner of some evergreen trees.

Hole 6 is flat and straight about 320' with trees lining the right side and a parking lot on left side. There is plenty of space and neither the trees or lot should be an issue.

Hole 7 is about 350’ long with a tee elevated above the basket. It drops off fairly quickly and levels out. The fairway is pretty skinny as it runs between a row of trees on the left and a soccer field on the right. There is a big net to keep soccer balls out of the trees with may help keep your discs out as well. Even though I’m not a real long thrower, I managed to get past the net. The basket is located near the scoreboard.

Hole 8 is 285' long and straight with a low hanging evergreen close to tee and another about 2/3 the way to the tee. Lefties will have a problem and righties are not much better.

Hole 9 is only about 220' with two big evergreens in front of tee. If a lefty can go low (6’) under the branches they'll be fine. A righty will probably need to do a bigger hyzer.

When I played this course, tees and signs didn’t exist. Fortunately, it had been mapped in the UDisc app to help me get around. There were several times the distances in the app didn’t appear accurate. Now there are signs and tees and it should be much easier to get around.

This was one park I was really looking forward to on this trip. It was new and had heard good things! As I turned into the park, the road ran uphill and I saw a basket immediately close to highway 81. As I got to the top of the hill and turned right I found the nearest parking spot. As I got out of the truck there was another basket in view. I walked up to it and found it to be #18. I couldn’t see a lot of the rest of the course, but did notice lots of trees and elevation and my interest was even more piqued. I guessed the basket I had seen turning into the park was #1 so I headed that way double checked UDisc to make sure.

Hole 1 is pretty long, pushing 500’ and everything slopes right to left which is challenging for right handers as the disc will want to slide away from the basket. Standing on the tee, there is a stone sign which may alter your throw a bit. On the left side there is a new fenced area which appears to be a dog park. The fairway does open up as you get close to the basket.

Hole 2 is pretty open with the basket tucked into some trees.

Hole 3 is a short, but with lots of trees and a skinny path to basket. I felt the location of a tee pad would really help define this hole. I was playing with one flag and had a choice of where to stand and throw.

Hole 4 is 120’ with a skinny path and lots of trees. A lefty will do better here.

Hole 5 is open to start but ends up in the trees. As I stood at the tee, I wondered if there was a clear path into the basket.

Hole 6 tee is up high and you have to go down and back up to the basket. There are a lot of trees close to the tee and I didn't see a clear path. Amazingly, both times I played it, I scored a par!

Hole 7 is pretty cool! It’s an elevated tee with an elevated basket (not as high) The basket is basically sitting on an island with trees almost surrounding it. As a right hander you’ll need a big arm and big anhyzer to get it into the basket. A lefty needs a big arm.

Hole 8 is a long open hole with a slightly elevated basket up against some trees. Let it rip but watch your second shot. I found my perception of distance, on my second shot, was short both times I played it.

Hole 9 ws great once I figured it out! It crosses Hole 8’s fairway, so be careful if others are playing. It throws high to low across an open area, but trees narrow the fairway the last 40’ or so which makes it a bit more difficult.

Hole 10 is a pretty cool hole. It’s short, narrow, straight and tempting. It looks like you should be able to park your drive, but the trees will have something to say about that! Enjoyed this hole!

Hole 11 is from trees to trees across an open area.

Hole 12 has some trees along the right and some street along the left. Neither should be much of an issue.

Hole 13 is a bit of walk from 12 basket is a bomber. It’s about 400’ and wide open. Let ‘er rip!

Hole 14 is a bit long and up hill all the way with a bit of a right bend. There are trees along the right side during the last half of the fairway with the basket tucked into the trees at the end.

Hole 15 is all downhill all the way with the basket in a narrow piece of grass between two roads. Watch your approach shot!

Hole 16 is back uphill all the way. Trees make it difficult to get there.

Hole 17 basket is on a peninsula with roads doing a ‘Y’ right in front of and then along it. It’s tricky to try and park it without getting into trouble. Right handers have added issues with the ground sloping towards the roads and a normal hyzer wants to slide that way. For me, laying up on the right side was successful.

Hole 18 basket was tucked under some trees. Again, some trees make it a bit tough to get there. I don’t consider it a great finishing hole, but that doesn’t make it a bad hole.

This course was so much fun, I played it again before I left town the next day! I would definitely find a reason to come here and play again. Since I was there they have put in tees and signs.

I drove into town and found the course fairly easily. I drove into the parking lot between the pool and the tennis courts, parked and got out. I immediately knew this wasn’t going to be good. It is a very busy people park with lots of sidewalk, play areas, picnic areas, etc. I did finally see a basket and knew what I had been hearing was true: The disc course wasn’t kept up and was probably going away.

I walked around a bit and found 3 baskets. I then drove around the park and found a few others. There was no map, tees or signs so I played safari style with the 7 baskets I did find and made up my own course. I would not recommend coming to this park to play disc golf, but it is a great people park! The baskets need to be removed because there are two other courses on the south edge of town.

This course was a ghost because no one I contacted could tell me if it existed. That is until I stopped at City Hall to ask about a potential disc golf course. The clerk was very familiar with it and even gave me a bit of history not to mention the location.

It is at 4th Street and 40th road. Tee 1 is 1/2 block east of 5th Street and Spruce street. It’s been there since at least 2004 and was built by a student for a high school project. His father was into the sport as well and helped him make the baskets and design the course.

It’s not a destination course by any means, but if you're in Jamestown you can stop and have a good time. It won’t take more than 30-45 minutes to play 9 holes. The course runs around the outside of the park. The baskets have 9 chains and use rubber feed buckets that are a bit too small. There are no tee pads, but you should be able to find most tee markers which are a square stone with the word Hole and the number on them.

Hole 1, 191’, probably should play parking lot OB which means there is a big right bend just before hole

Hole 2, 141’, basket at corner of building

Hole 3, 240’, trees along right edge, playground along left edge, narrow opening

Hole 4, 227’, trees along right edge

Hole 5, 270', pretty wide open until you get close to the basket with bleachers on the left, then a tree and it is up against a building: Be aware of people

Hole 6, 315', a blind shot because of a shed in the way, sits right next to a baseball field with a road on the other side which could easily be made OB

Hole 7, 155', no really any danger there, road off to the right a little bit, have to throw over the corner of a fence, sits kind of in a corner of two roads but is far enough in not to be a real concern

Hole 8, 247', mature trees along the right edge, baseball field on the left edge, could be a bit tight

Hole 9, 163', baskets don't catch real well, 9 chains, plastic feed basket for catcher, reminds me of that skinny basket you can buy to sharpen your putting skills

It’s kind of surprising how a course never appears as I might imagined it would. My expectations of this course were very low. I imagined busted up baskets in tall, un-mowed grass hidden in shrubby trees.

Instead, what I found was a wide open area with a few trees and a playground. The area was mowed and the trees were planted with some order. I couldn’t see all the baskets but the main area was wide open! This was going to be better than I had imagined.

I parked on the east side of the area next to the Walleye Point restrooms. As I got out of my truck, I looked around and decided to take the closest basket and start playing to the nearest basket that would take me around the perimeter, counterclockwise

As I'm playing the first few holes, I notice the baskets are all pretty low. I’m guessing they are probably a foot lower than normal. They are all single chain rounded wide outside.

A few course observations:

--- Hole 4 poses the first challenge. It's from the SW corner of the big, open park going down through some trees and some bushy area. It’s not real long, but can be tough to get to at 210’.
--- Hole 6 is kind of cool. It goes ‘uphill’ through some trees. The basket is not real far, 202’,  but you can't just haul off and heave it either. You’ll have to have some accuracy.
--- I think right where I started and doing the counter clockwise thing is the right option. It seems to flow quite well.
--- I can kind of see paths where they have mowed from one basket to another
--- I also think that playing it backward would be a great way to turn it into an 18 hole course.

Lovewell Lake DGC doesn’t qualify as a destination course, but if I was at the lake, I wouldn’t hesitate to go throw a little plastic.

These distances are from the East most basket running counter clockwise around the park and were acquired with a wheel.

Hole 1: 270’ NW, wide open except for one tree you have to go around
Hole 2: 195’ S, close to playground, two trees close to basket
Hole 3: 323’ slight dogleg right towards evergreen trees
Hole 4: 210' down hill, through trees, straight south
Hole 5: 245' slight dogleg right to the East along the little ridge
Hole 6: 202' up over the little ridge, slightly right at end heading northeast
Hole 7: 260' ESE back down over the little ridge, basket is little lower than tee
Hole 8: 219' back up over the little ridge, straight shot to NW
Hole 9: 247' slight dogleg close to tee, picnic table close, to the NE, basket out in open

Here I am in Beloit at Chataqua Park getting ready to tee off…finally! It's taken me about 25 minutes to get everything ready for the first course of Day 1 on my third trip. It’s a bit chilly and I’ve got gloves/hoody/stocking cap on to get started.

I had a little trouble finding Tee 1 until I found the map on the side of the building at the entrance of the park. I have a printed map, but the building gave me a solid landmark. Like NCK1990 (DGCourseReview), once I got started, it flowed pretty well.   Before you go, you should print the map from DGCourseReview.

My first impressions of the park included a good amount of trees, not a lot of elevation, and the infamous river did truly exist! I'm looked forward to seeing how it plays out.

The first hole (295’) is tree lined (tunnel) with 7-8 large trees on each side with about a 20-25 foot wide opening down the middle. It is flat until you’re almost to the basket when it goes up 10-15 feet towards the road/bridge.

The second hole (310’) is similar to the first, but the path through the trees is wider. The lowest branches are about 20 feet high. Basket two is kind of hidden behind a tree. It is straight down the tube and it's behind the rock circle with the memorial and the two flags

Hole 4 is the river shot and the reviewers on DGCR were correct when the talked about it being a tricky/tough shot. The tee box is right next to the river and the distance across the river is not really a problem even for me without a big arm. Getting past the trees can be a problem though! The throw off the tee box is probably a better opening for lefties with a tighter opening for righties. The difficulty is the trees lining the river in front of the tee box not to mention the trees on the far bank. My goal was to get through the tree opening and end up under the bridge where there was an opening. Unfortunately, I had a bit of a late release and caught tree branches just to the right of the bridge on the far side and my disc met its fate in the water below. I did spend a bit of time looking with no luck.

The basket for 4, holes 5-8 and the tee for 9 are all on the north side of the river. There is only one way over. The ramp on the south side is long and you don’t want to make the trek more than the two times you need to.

I found a couple of minor issues with Hole 9. The tee is real close to #8 basket and they probably should have readjusted one of those two. The other issue is finding basket 9. There are two placements for most of the baskets and as I discovered, the gray color of older baskets against the gray of the trees can make the baskets hard to find. I played 9 tee to basket 12, but didn’t discover that little problem until I was over the bridge. I didn’t make the trip back over to re-throw!

Hole 11 runs along a road. For a righty, it's a big hyzer around trees and a softball/baseball backstop. For a lefty there are more trees which require less of a hyzer and more of a straight shot. The basket is placed behind the backstop. This could be a messy hole if people are using the field.

It wasn’t until I was well into the course I discovered some tee pads have distance and hole # on them. Most of them don't and it looks like they have just been worn off and not repainted.

Standing on the tee for Hole 14 I wasn’t real impressed. It's long and narrows as you go towards the basket which is on the back side of some tennis courts. There is a road that runs tight and trees in the middle which makes it difficult. It can be done, but I’m thinking there's probably a better way of doing this hole especially if there are people utilizing the courts.

Like I noted on Hole 9, the gray weathered baskets make them hard to find against the gray trees. A lot of baskets are parked close to trees.

The finishing hole is not real long, flat for half way, and ends up going up hill pretty good. The difficulty is the four trees that provide a ‘wall’. Either you go low and don't get there or you have to go way up high (tomahawk). Probably a big anhyzer would work best but I don't have an arm for either of those two options.

Quick review of the course: I like it! It had a lot of holes that made me think and I like that in a course. The river shots added some diversity to an otherwise flatter, tree infested course. It reminded me a bit of Oak Park in Wichita which I play a lot. I’d definitely like another shot at this course! When I finished it was 43 degrees with winds at 11 from the SE and completely overcast.

A side note: A guy that works at the park stopped me and gave me a disc that belongs to Fluty after noticing I was from Wichita. He had lost it last year at a tournament and even though they talked, they never connected so I was able to bring it back to Wichita and get it back to its rightful owner. It also gave me a chance to talk to the worker about disc golf. He had never played even though he worked around the course.

UPDATE Below

Camp Hiawatha belongs to the Salvation Army. It is a 10 hole course and has the possibility to be expanded in the future. The ACDGC held their Ice Bowl here this year and added holes in the tees along the river. The longest hole is about 380’ and the shortest about 150’. There was only one hole that was what I would consider wide open and even that one had some trees close to the basket. The tees are landscaping timbers with the front was about 3 feet wide with the distance carved in it. From each end another timber angles out at about 70 degrees backwards for about six feet. One of those had the hole number and an S or L carved in it for long/short tees. Inside the timbers it was dirt. Some of the tee boxes had dirt that was pretty loose and uneven.

I found the course to be a lot of fun. Being older, I’ll never have a big arm so courses like this are very enjoyable. There was plenty of challenge with tees, trees and hole layouts. At the same time, there is some opportunity to shoot for an ace and for sure some birdies. I played the Yellow even and the Red at minus two. I can see myself playing it at -5 or -6 in the future.

The only real issue I had with the course is the Yellow Tee on hole 6. It bumped up tight against a group of trees with the basket about 190' on the other side. There was no path to the basket unless you went over 30’ trees or around them. To get around them you would have to throw at a 45 degree angle to the basket with the offending trees right in front of you. The Red Tee on this hole was better.

UPDATE:
I don't know what it is about this course, but I got to play it again...Unexpectedly. The weather was too nice when I walked out of school so I texted my throwing buddy, Ty, and he was already thinking the same thing. This time around I noticed a few new things. One of those was all the man-made obstacles: picnic tables, play areas, etc. They weren't huge areas, but big enough to be aware of. We also ran into another guy who plays there regularly and says that summer is a tough time to get on with all the kid camps on the schedule. I guess it is a camp first and a disc course second! Another thing Ty and I talked about on the way home was all the different shots we'd used and were tempted to use. It really is a good course for honing the game, especially the mid to short game.

Thresher National is located on the campus of Bethel College. The parking instructions put you by the tennis courts and holes 6-9. After parking, basket 9 is close and can be used to warm up. I had some difficulty finding the first tee and have modified the instructions on dgcoursereview.com to help a bit more. I’ve uploaded pictures of the maps and rules to dgcoursereview.com which may be helpful transitioning to the back 9 because the sign for Hole 6 is missing.

The first 5 holes are in a large area between buildings. None of the holes actually go between buildings and instead crisscross the park area. There are a number of sidewalks to cross which makes playing a bit more difficult when students are present. Holes 2 and 3 go back and forth and cross over the fairway for Hole 5 which runs perpendicular to them. If there are multiple groups throwing, you’ll need to be aware of them.

It is a relatively short course with six of the holes being under 300’. There are no OB rules posted so I played cement, including sidewalks, on the front 9 and roads on the back 9. There are a fair number of trees on the front 5 which kept the course interesting because decisions had to be made. Hole 9 starts by throwing through a hole in a hedge row of trees with a road running parallel with your throw. It’s one of those courses where someone at my skill level has a chance of a sub-zero round and maybe and Ace. I know this because I shot -01 and Hole 8 almost gave up my first Ace, but the disc slid off the chains on the left side.

I enjoyed this course and it kind of reminded me of a smaller town park course. Everything is new so the tee signs were easy to read and the baskets in excellent shape. I live within a half hour of this course so I’m sure I’ll be on it again. By the time I was done, the wind had calmed to 7 and temp dropped to 54. It was a beautiful spring evening in January!

I updated this course in dgcoursereview.com and mapped the holes in the UDisc app. ALERT: You need to know the map in the UDisc app shows Tee 1 in a parking lot with cars and in reality that lot is gone and they have planted grass.

West Branch Park is in the middle of the south end of town. It’s a very small park with a picnic area, some playground equipment, a tennis court, a basketball slab and some rest rooms. All 9 baskets are easily visible because most of them are close together. You’ll need to be careful of people when throwing into #1 and at #2. The baskets are in very good condition, have numbers on them and appear to be buried about a foot low.

Tees don’t exist so I threw from the right side of the basket (looking at my target) just outside the wood chips which were spread with a 3-4 foot radius. I threw from basket to basket which means I started on hole 2 having found basket 1 and not wanting to walk back to basket 9.  It is a putter and mid-range course. I updated the distances in dgcoursereview.com and the UDisc app. They range 56’ – 312’ with 3 holes under 100’ and 3 more holes under 200’. In order to make it a bit tougher, I ended up making obvious things OB like yards, road, sidewalk, cement pads, etc.

This is another course that if I lived pretty close, I may play it once in a while, but it is not a destination.
